In the fall of 2004, The Vanderbilt University Women’s Club Lacrosse Team was founded by a group of freshman and sophomore players who didn’t want to stop playing just because their high school teams finished. They were determined to continue at college without the rigorous and sports-only focus that Varsity sports demand. Molly Fegan, Samantha Ansley and Beth Arnold separately went to LaDonna Meuchel, Associate Director of Club Sports, to make the possibility of a women’s club lacrosse team a reality. United with the same dream, the three students were quick to gain momentum through recruiting, fundraising and tournament efforts. Thanks to donors in the inaugural season, support from the Varsity lacrosse team and the overwhelming enthusiasm of Vanderbilt student lacrosse players, the season was a huge success.
By 2005, Vanderbilt Women’s Club Lacrosse Team joined the Southeastern Women’s Lacrosse League (SWLL) as an Associate member, participating in the annual SWLL PlayDay and competing in eight league games. However, for the first two seasons of the Club’s existence, the team did not have a coach and relied on Fegan and other captains to run the team and the practices. You need JavaScript enabled to view it played and coached the University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s Club Lacrosse Team and was eager to help the Vanderbilt club. Coach Audra volunteers as our Head Coach, and she is a US Lacrosse Level I certified coach and Tennessee Women’s Lacrosse Official. She has brought a tremendous amount of commitment, team unity and a winning record to our Club that strengthens with each season.
Like the founding players, our players are talented lacrosse players from across the country including New York, Maryland, Illinois, Florida, Texas and California. Each player, like her hometown, is diverse in lacrosse skills and abilities. One thing that all of our players have in common is heart.
